Location of clinical studies
The UCLA ADC conducts clinical studies through the Katherine & Benjamin
Kagan Alzheimer Disease Treatment Development Program located on the UCLA campus
in Westwood.
What are clinical studies?
• Clinical studies are medical research studies that seek to answer specific
questions about new therapies or new ways to use existing therapies. They may
involve medication or some other kind of intervention, such as education or exercise.
• Clinical studies are the primary way that researchers/scientists/physicians
find out if a promising treatment is safe and effective for patients or if some
treatments are more effective than others.
• Clinical studies are typically performed AFTER years of laboratory research
and animal testing .
Why participate in a clinical study?
• Have regular contact with the research team
• Receive state-of-the-art care and talk with experts who have practical
experience
• Find new ways to cope with present challenges
• Learn new insights into what to expect in the future
• Make valuable contributions to the knowledge that will help future patients
Are there risks are involved in participating
in a clinical study?
New medications may have risks that are unknown. The research team will explain
all known risks of participating in a clinical study and will answer all
questions about the study.
Is there any compensation for participating in a clinical study?
Compensation varies depending on the type of research study and how long the
study lasts.
What is a placebo?
Placebos are inactive pills made to look like the study medication used in
the clinical study. Placebos allow the research team to learn whether the
treatment being given works better than ordinary treatment.
